Ricin poison detected at Pentagon, an urgent need for an easy and rapid detection solution for Biowarfare defense.

On Oct. 2, 2018, the Pentagon's Central Processing Center and the Secret Service reported that officials had intercepted suspicious packages sent to Pentagon and White House.  The packages sent to Pentagon were identified as containing highly toxic ricin poison (See ABC News, USA Today and New York Times). These incidents clearly remind us that Bio-threats are real and can happen anywhere and at any time. Rapid detection of toxins such as ricin can help to defend against these very scary situations.

“ANP has been working with the U.S. military and government agencies to strengthen the biodetection capability against those Threats over the past two decades,” said Dr. Ray Yin, CEO of ANP Technologies, Inc. “With our proprietary nanomanipulation technology, ANP’s device can rapidly detect high concentrations of toxins without the need to serially dilute the white powder samples on-site, thus avoiding what is known as a ‘Hook effect,’ while wearing a bulky protective gear. The Hook effect is a deadly false negative result that has plagued all the other handheld assays (HHAs) on the market. In addition, ANP’s device utilizes multiplexed tests, which can detect up to 5 Bio-Threat agents simultaneously on a single test strip with high sensitivity, thus greatly reducing detection costs and logistical burden.”

As published by Federal Resources, ANP Technologies’s NIDS® Biothreat Detection System is widely used by U.S. military, first responders, and emergency health professionals as an effective tool to detect a broad range of biothreats including ricin toxin. The system includes a handheld device capable of detecting at least 10 different biothreat agents including B. anthracis, Vaccinia, Brucella, Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis, Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB), F. tularensis, Botulinum Toxin, V. cholerae, Ricin, Coxiella burnetiid, and Y. pestis.
